How to Become More of a Man
Andy Rhodes asks if it is possible to become more masculine. “Is it too late to learn how to become a real man after graduating college? How do you become more of a man?” I think that’s three different questions, and that the answer is yes to all of them. Except the last…
Masculinity, is about masculine traits like being strong, straight forward, uncomplicated, solution oriented and so forth. We’ve all got them, men and women, but men tend to have more. I think it is possible to grow these traits in the same way as you exercise your muscles or learn to dance. As much as you can learn to control or suppress ‘unwanted’ parts of your personality.
To question number two: No, it is not too late. After graduating from college, that’s when you become a real man. College is part of your youth, where you have no responsibility for anything but yourself and your education. After graduation you have to face the real world and figure out how to be a part of it.
How to become more of a man is the most interesting question. It’s about finding yourself and finding your place. You can’t become more of a man by growing more muscles, talking louder, laying more women or drinking more beer. A real man, in my opinion, is a guy who assumes responsibility. Not by taking the blame when something goes wrong, but by doing what needs to be done.
