Is Killing Vital to Manliness?
An article in the Radar Blog suggests that future robot fighting machines will take the man out of manliness. When we have no scene to show our physical superiority we will be no more than girls. How stupid is that?
The article “Paranoid Android” show that remote controlled weapons have been developed and that future battle zones will be metal-only. And somehow the author jumps straight to the conclusion that this affects our manliness.
But what happens to the male psyche when metallic substitutes do all the fighting, dying on a mechanised battlefield while armchair generals cower in bunkers, hands on the remotes? A millennia-strong tradition of men winning the approval of society through violent endeavour will be wiped out. So, too, will large aspects of what it means to be a man.
I don’t get it. I’ve never been in an armed fight. Does that make me less a man? Don’t think so. Being manly is about being true to your masculine qualities and abilites, instead of suppressing them. One of these virtues is the ability to fight and kill, when that kind of behavior is called for. Being able to roar and hit back in order to protect land and family, is an ability that comes in handy in a lot of situations besides war. Every family and society need strong men, but we don’t need wars to prove that we are strong.

[...] That’s cool, unexpected advice from a guy with a gory reputation. And there’s more. This is what Rob Zombie told Men’s Health when they asked him about anger: I used to have a really bad temper. One day I realized, “This is stupid.” You don’t have to go into therapy and cry about it, just knock it off. But it’s still there. I have two speeds: really mellow and psychotic. I just try not to let psychotic happen. When I get really pissed, the thing that calms me is my dog. Dracula is a pug and is so hypersensitive that even if you laugh too loud, he gets so terrified and starts like he’s having a panic attack. So I stay calm because I know he’ll freak out. Dracula’s my stress barometer. [...]

[...] Mark Wahlberg making a movie for Antoine Fuqua (Training Day) is on a par with Gerard Butler making a Spartan movie for Zack Snyder. If you want to look tough and macho and cool, Fuqua is your man. Shooter gives Mark W. brawls, shoot-outs, manly sprints, slow-mo strides of manliness, manly suffering (he gets shot), manly moments of self-surgery (pretty interesting), baleful macho stares, and tough guy dialogue aplenty.
