Breaking news: Men get distracted by beautiful women
Ok, so it’s nothing new, except that it’s now been proved by scientists. They took a bunch of guys, showed them a picture of a beautiful woman and then tested them for negotiation skills. They even controlled the results by repeating the test but this time showing pictures of elderly women. Guess what happened.
Yeah, you got it; the guys who saw beautiful women lost some of their decision-making skills. Big surprise! But wait, there’s more: The effect was stronger, the more testosterone the men had. Guys with higher testosterone levels got more distracted by seeing a gorgeous girl.
The researchers were happy to prove the myth that men are not as cool as we think we are. If we are offered a deal from two persons, a beautiful woman and a man, we would go for the woman even if it was a poorer deal.
“We like to think we are all rational beings, but our research suggests that people with high testosterone levels are very vulnerable to sexual cues. If there are no cues around, they behave normally. But if they see sexual images they become impulsive,” said Dr. Siegfried DeWitte, one of the researchers at The University of Leuven, to BBC News.
Still, he don’t think that this ‘weakness’ is of the crippling kind. DeWitte has great trust in men, being one of us, and says that we’re “not powerless to fight it. Hormone levels are one thing, but we can learn to deal with it.”
I certainly think so.
One more thing: Do you want to know how they measured the testosterone levels? With a ruler. It’s true! They compared the length of the men’s ring finger to his index finger. The theory is this: The longer the ring finger is, in comparison, the higher testosterone levels the finger owner has. Amazing.
