Women choose TV over diamonds
Three out of four women would rather have a plasma TV than a diamond necklace, when asked in a survey. The study let women choose between equally priced objects and the women surprised even themselves. Most of them actually preferred a top notch cellphone to designer shoes and the iPod to a black dress.
The survey called “Girls Gone Wired” was done by market researcher TRU for Oxygen surveyed 1,400 women and 700 men, 15 to 49 years old to compare tech attitudes among the sexes. The results are surprising: “Men and women are equally competent in the technology arena,” says Oxygen CEO Geraldine Laybourne. Whats more; we are equally interested and that the women often are the decision makers when it comes to buying.
“From every piece of data we’ve seen, by and large, household budgets are controlled by women,” says Randy Komisar, a partner at Kleiner Perkins Caufield & Byers, a prominent venture-capital investment firm. But they are “far more oriented toward solutions rather than tools.”

Hey! I am involved in “closing” diamond sales and I would rather have a huge, new, plasma television set too!
As a result of this research, all I can do is to say “HELLO” to the new 21st century type of woman where lots of bytes are more important than “bling.”

Hi Tom. That surprises me, coming from a guy like you. Wouldn’t this hurt your business?

Actually, the only thing that is harming the diamond business internationally is the discord regarding “Conflict Diamonds” or if you will, “Blood Diamonds.” The diamond industry has put strict measures into place in accordance with what is known as the Kimberly Process. This is to insure that illicitly mined and/or smuggled ROUGH diamonds aren’t sold into legitimate distrbution channels. It’s an internationally coordinated response to the financing of civil wars in nations like Sierra Leone. I have an article on my blogsite regarding this.
In any event, most of the women that I know want high tech consumer items and DIAMOND jewelry too. But then again, I live in Las Vegas where everybody WANTS EVERYTHING. Usually all at once!

Hi again. I’ve read your article on “Blood Diamonds” but I’m not sure if i get why it’s hurting your business. Are you saying that “Blood Diamonds” are not a big problem but it hurts the business because it makes people afraid to buy them?
While we’re talking about buying diamonds; Do you have some good advice for guys that want to buy diamonds for their women?
Btw, I liked what you said about Las Vegas women. I guess the perfect thing would be a diamond framed TV…
